College & university

Post-secondary psychological assessment and documentation.

A psychological assessment can document findings and functional impact. The college or university—not the assessor—decides its current documentation and accommodation requirements.

Do universities require updated psychoeducational testing?

There is no universal expiry date for a psychological assessment report. An institution may request current information when an older report does not describe present functional impact, the original question was different or its published documentation policy requires more. Ask the accessibility office what it needs before booking reassessment.

Start with the receiving institution

Keep the institution's written answer. Requirements can vary by school, program and circumstance.

  • Which documentation is required to establish disability-related need?
  • Must the report describe current functional limitations?
  • Is an older assessment acceptable with updated clinical information?
  • Are interim accommodations available while documentation is being obtained?
  • Does the institution need the full report, a summary or a specific form?
  • How should documentation be submitted securely, and by what deadline?

Where is post-secondary assessment available?

BrainLab provides in-person psychological assessment in Ottawa. Virtual assessment is available across Ontario and in Nunavut where the referral question and required assessment methods can be addressed appropriately in that format.

The proposed format depends on the referral question, age and testing or other methods required.

Virtual completion does not guarantee that a college or university will accept the resulting documentation; the receiving institution sets its own requirements.

Which assessment question is central?

Learning disability / dyslexia

A psychoeducational assessment may examine reading, writing, mathematics, cognitive/learning information and current academic impact.

Learning-disability assessment

ADHD

Assessment may clarify developmental attention and executive-functioning patterns and current academic impact.

Adult ADHD assessment

Autism

Assessment may clarify developmental social-communication, sensory, routine and related functional patterns.

Adult autism assessment

Broader diagnostic question

Psychodiagnostic assessment may fit when mental-health clarification and functional impact are central.

What to gather

Only send records after BrainLab provides secure instructions.

  • the institution's current documentation requirements
  • prior assessments, IEPs or accommodation records
  • relevant transcripts or academic history
  • examples of current functional impact
  • deadlines for registration, exams, placement or accessibility review

What BrainLab can and cannot determine

BrainLab can assess within professional scope, explain findings, describe relevant functional impact and make clinically supported recommendations. It cannot approve accommodations, funding, admission, academic standing, licensing or another institution's decision. Check the institution's current requirements before booking so the assessment question and timing can be planned appropriately.
