Psychoeducational assessment

Learning disability and dyslexia assessment.

A learning-disability assessment examines the pattern behind persistent academic difficulty—not simply whether one test score is low.

What type of assessment is used for dyslexia?

A comprehensive psychoeducational assessment can evaluate reading and related learning questions. It brings together academic achievement, relevant cognitive and processing information, developmental and school history, intervention response, observations and functional impact. The conclusion uses appropriate formal terminology while recognizing that people commonly use the word dyslexia for significant word-reading and spelling difficulties.

What the assessment may examine

Learning difficulty, ADHD—or both?

Academic work can look inconsistent when attention, executive functioning, anxiety, language, sleep, instruction or a specific learning difficulty is involved. ADHD and a learning disability can also occur together. Assessment examines the pattern across tasks, time and settings instead of forcing an either/or answer.

What information is useful?

BrainLab will provide secure instructions before sensitive records are shared.

  • school history, report cards and prior assessment results
  • specific areas of difficulty and areas of strength
  • interventions, tutoring or accommodations tried and the response
  • teacher or instructor information where relevant and consented
  • the decision the report needs to inform

Where is learning-disability assessment available?

BrainLab provides in-person psychological assessment in Ottawa. Virtual assessment is available across Ontario and in Nunavut where the referral question and required assessment methods can be addressed appropriately in that format.

The proposed format depends on the referral question, age and testing or other methods required.

Reports, IEPs and accommodations

A report may inform educational planning, an IEP or post-secondary accessibility discussion. Schools and institutions make their own identification, placement, eligibility and accommodation decisions. A diagnosis or recommendation does not bind the receiving organization.
