Build your preparation checklist

Five short steps organize practical preparation without collecting names, dates, records or health details.

Prepare without having everything figured out.

  • About two minutes
  • No uploads or identifying details
  • A practical checklist you can print

Before the assessment

Follow your usual routine where reasonably possible. Take prescribed medication as directed unless your prescriber has told you otherwise.

  • Review the appointment details, location and format.
  • Complete requested forms or questionnaires by the stated date.
  • Gather relevant previous reports, school information or records only when requested.
  • Prepare a short list of the questions you most want the assessment to clarify.
  • Discuss accessibility, mobility, sensory, communication or pacing needs in advance.

Children and adolescents

Help the young person know what to expect

  • Use calm, age-appropriate language: the appointments help understand how they think, learn or feel.
  • Avoid promising a diagnosis, score or particular outcome.
  • Bring usual glasses, hearing supports, communication supports and any agreed comfort items.
  • Plan food, rest, travel and transitions around the appointment schedule.
  • Tell BrainLab about relevant school or participation needs before the visit.

Adults

Prepare your questions and relevant history

  • Note when the concern became noticeable and how it affects daily functioning.
  • Bring usual glasses, hearing supports or communication aids.
  • Gather previous reports only when they are relevant and BrainLab provides secure instructions.
  • Plan enough time around the appointment so the day is not rushed.
  • Ask in advance about breaks, pacing or participation needs.

In person

Planning an Ottawa visit

BrainLab is at 222 Queen Street, 10th Floor, Ottawa, Ontario. Paid underground parking is available in the building, with other paid underground and street options nearby; availability is not guaranteed. Parliament LRT / O-Train station is less than a five-minute walk away. Elevators provide access from the main floor.

The 10th floor is secured. Call (613) 519-5567 when you arrive so a team member can let you in.

Virtual appointments

Privacy, technology and environment

Virtual assessment is not suitable for every method or circumstance. BrainLab will explain which steps can be delivered online and which require in-person attendance.

  • Use a private space where you can speak without being overheard.
  • Confirm a stable internet connection, working camera, microphone and device power.
  • Close unrelated applications and silence avoidable notifications.
  • Have requested materials and a way to take notes nearby.
  • Tell BrainLab if privacy, technology or the home environment may limit participation.

After testing

Scoring, integration, report and feedback

After appointments are complete, the clinician scores and integrates the relevant information. Every psychological assessment includes a written report and feedback appointment. Reports are generally within approximately four weeks of the final assessment appointment, although timing can vary.
