Occupational Therapy for everyday participation.

Occupational therapy considers how health, abilities, environment and daily demands affect participation in meaningful activities. BrainLab provides this service virtually across Ontario.

Purpose

Support grounded in daily life

Occupational therapy focuses on the activities people need or want to do in everyday life. It considers the relationship between the person, the activity and the environment, with practical recommendations shaped by the concern being addressed.

What may be considered

Function, participation and practical demands

Occupational therapy can consider areas such as:

  • Daily routines and life skills
  • Cognitive, sensory or motor demands
  • Participation at home, school, work or in the community
  • Environmental or task-related barriers
  • Adaptive strategies or equipment considerations

Who may benefit

Support for practical needs across daily settings

Occupational therapy may be useful when sensory, cognitive, motor, environmental or executive-functioning demands make everyday participation harder. The occupational therapist considers the person’s goals and context before recommending a service.

A distinct professional role

How OT differs from psychotherapy

Psychotherapy focuses on emotional, relational and mental-health concerns through a therapeutic process. Occupational therapy focuses on participation in meaningful activities and the practical relationship between the person, task and environment. The services can be complementary, but one does not replace the other.

A tailored process

What the service may involve

  1. Clarify the occupational concern

The inquiry identifies the activity, participation need or practical question to be considered.

  2. Review relevant context

The occupational therapist considers the person’s goals, routines, environment and applicable functional information.

  3. Discuss recommendations or next steps

The format depends on the service arranged and may include practical strategies or other occupational therapy recommendations.

Virtual delivery

Occupational therapy is provided virtually.

Virtual delivery allows routines, environments and practical needs to be discussed from the setting in which they occur. We’ll let you know if the concern requires a different kind of service.

Frequently asked questions

What can occupational therapy help with?

OT can help clarify barriers affecting routines, life skills, school, work, community participation, sensory demands and other meaningful activities, depending on the service arranged.

Who may benefit from OT?

Children, adolescents or adults may benefit when health, abilities, environment or daily demands affect participation. An inquiry helps determine whether BrainLab’s virtual OT service fits the concern.

Is BrainLab’s OT service virtual?

Yes. BrainLab provides this occupational therapy service virtually across Ontario.

What happens during an OT appointment?

The occupational therapist discusses the activity or participation concern, relevant routines and context, then considers practical strategies or recommendations suited to the service.

Can OT help with sensory or executive-functioning needs?

Sensory and executive-functioning demands may be considered when they affect daily activities. The purpose and limits of the service are confirmed before care begins.

How is OT different from psychotherapy?

OT centres on daily participation, tasks and environments. Psychotherapy centres on emotional, relational and mental-health concerns. They are distinct services that may sometimes complement each other.

How much does OT cost?
